Garage rock is a raw form of rock and roll that enjoyed its original period of wide success in the United States and Canada, from 1963 to 1967. It was originally known as "punk rock," but renamed to "garage rock" to avoid confusion with 1970s punk a la the Sex Pistols.

The style was typified by very low cost record production, recordings often made by teenagers in the garages of their suburban homes. The 1958 record "Jenny Lee" by Jan and Arnie (later to evolve into Jan and Dean), is sometimes cited as the first "garage rock" hit although earlier, less well known examples, no doubt, existed.
