Cowpunk or Country Punk is a subgenre of punk rock that began in southern California in the 1980s, especially Los Angeles. It combined punk rock with country and blues both in sound, subject matter, attitude, and style. It tended to downplay the fashion elements associated with the musically similar British psychobilly movement, and grew directly out of the influence of bands like The Cramps and The Gun Club with few direct ties to the British movement.
Bands associated with cowpunk include The Gun Club, The Meat Puppets, Jason and the Scorchers, The Crocketts,Blood On The Saddle, Rubber Rodeo, The Lazy Cowgirls, The Screamin' Sirens, Frank Black and the Catholics, Lucky and the Bastards, Tex and the Horseheads, early Vandals,The Rank and File, Everclear, The Mekons and the late ex-Surf Punks singer Scott Goddard. Social Distortion were initially a melodic hardcore punk band, but in the late 1980s they incorporated cowpunk elements.
