XMPlay 3.1 |
Summary: XMPlay - Your MODule Player ;)
Details: XMPlay is an audio player, supporting the OGG / MP3 / MP2 / MP1 / WMA / WAV / MO3 / IT / XM / S3M / MTM / MOD / UMX audio formats, and PLS / M3U / ASX playlists. A load more formats are also supported via Winamp plugins. When XMPlay was first released in 1998, only the XM format was supported, hence the name "XMPlay". For Linux, Mac OSX or PocketPC user? Want to enjoy the same quality MOD playback as XMPlay users? You can... BASSMOD. There's so much more on their website at http://www.un4seen.com that I can't fit here.
Pros: Tiny in size compared to WinAMP, Better playing of MODs especially ITs and XMs, Compatible with the Sonique plugins for Visulations and Winamp's Input Plugins, Skins, Customizable shortcut keys, etc.
Cons: Doesn't have all the "extras" of WinAMP and it is a much smaller group of people but is being developed regularly. Unlikely poor Winamp :(. Can be a little weird to use at first.
Period used: Since the beginning of 2004.
Other products used: Winamp 2/5, QuintessintalPlayer, Sonique, Real Player, WMP, Quicktime, MusicMatch Jukebox, etc.

XMPlay 3.1 |
Summary: Accuratte, fast player for tracked music
Details: Originally designed to play tracked music (MOD, S3M, XM, IT) it now supports most major formats, is skinable, supports WinAmp plugins, and is extremely fast and lightweight. You won't find a more accurate player for these classic file types. WinAmp does NOT cut it; there are various bugs in their module decoder, and it does not play these files back as accurately.
Pros: CUE files, WinAmp Plugins, Accurate MOD/S3M/XM/IT support!
Cons: No FoxyTunes support yet ;)
Period used: 2 years
Other products used: WinAmp, foobar2000, MPC

Summary: Best one out there
Details: This is the best audio player I have used. It is all I need without all the other stupid features that I don't even use, even though they may be cool. As a result, this player is VERY FAST. I tried all of the other players here about 2 years ago and they all bloated up my system and/or crashed frequently. This is the ONLY player which hasn't given me any problems! Use it for ALL audio needs and even for CD's with the plug-in, its really fast at loading for startup and in between.
Pros: very fast and
Cons: NONE!!! ( Except not supported yet by FoxyTunes :-( )

Summary: Excellent! Low memory usage/best audio reproduction
Details: I've used this audio player for 3+ years and it is the best. Besides having plugins to play just about any audio file this audio player runs on 9 MB of memory. It has great audio reproduction, is developed by un4seen, the same people that make the BASS audio library, and integrates into windows xp very well.
Pros: Excellent sound reproduction, supports many filetypes including streamed audio, low memory usage, free
Cons: windows only
Period used: 3+ years
Other products used: Winamp, Windows Media Player, Sonique 1 & 2, XMMS, Helix, MusicMatch, Real Player, iTunes and many more that I can't remember.

Summary: Great little player - packs a lot in
Details: The only thing lacking is some sort of directory, or folder listing holding all the music in list of albums or artists - but obviously this would probably increase the size of the program and the processing it would require and I'm not sure it's worth the loss of performance.
Pros: Amount of features considering it's size.
Cons: no directories
Period used: 4months

Summary: IMHO very "Winamp (2.x) competetive
Details: Been hooked on this player since '03! More than the above average audio player, it boasts the most accurate and original decoding of streamed, ripped, and file audio output at the fraction of cpu costs! Yeah. You got your favorite playa...But this one is all that! All the toys and inputs to increase its small footprint to "gosh-a-mighty sound!" Tired most of the rest...For the genres of jamz I play (jazz, ole' skool (rock n' roll, soul stuff), rythmic soul etc.,) fits my P4 to a T! Now, where was I? Oh yeah..."Band Of Gypsies..."

Summary: good audio quality, small size, bad UI
Details: i can't see why anyone would want to use this. it's really not that bad, but for the power user/minimalists who know what they're doing and can't stand resource hogs there's foobar. for the average user there's winamp. for the other unsupported filetypes (qt, real, etc.) and video playback there's media player classic. unless you're playing lots of mods i wouldn't recommend it.
Pros: audio quality, file size, playback of several formats
Cons: UI seems very clunky.
