iTunes 4.6 |
Summary: Better sound quality than WMA, but not as easy to use
Details: The quality of ACC files seems to be better than WMA or mp3 (for the same sampling rate). The library of music is easier to search through in the media player setup.
Pros: Better sound quality for native encoded tracks
Cons: no significant drawbacks
Period used: 3 months
Other products used: media player 9. Realplayer

iTunes 4.6 |
Summary: Best audio player available
Details: iTunes is perfect for any iPod owner or anyone who shares the main quality of iPod owners, a love of music. For other players playlists exist but fall far short of the superior ways that iTunes handles them and makes them available for use. The equalizer is complete and very accurate. The iTunes Music Store has most anything you could want to hear. And most of all the player itself is just damn sexy ;). Just try it and I guaranty you will fall in love with it as I have.
Pros: Simple playlists, party shuffle, seemless integration with iPod, ...
Cons: It needs an "always on top" option for the mini-player.
Period used: Over a year.
Other products used: Winamp 2, 3, 5, WMP, a few other no name players

Summary: Great player!
Details: iTunes is definately my favorite player for Windows. The music organization/playlist management is excellent. The equalizer is also excellent - the sound is nice and clear. Tons of great features like party shuffle, smart playlist, and miniplayer. And iTMS. And it's so beautiful!
Pros: playlist system, sound quality, features
Cons: no option to automatically add all files from folder to library and keep updated for new additions, the cd track info thing can take a minute on loading if you've got a cd in

Details: Excellent playlist handling, excellent audio support, Rating system and graphic support make this a standout player. Miss Milkdrop from winamp. That visualizer used to haul ass. The library sharing is awsome. .m3u (standard playlist from shoutcast) needs to be handled a little better by itunes.

Summary: Everything I need and more.
Details: I only started using the iTMS after I started using iTunes. It's that good. I do have a few wishes for it, but overall, it's one the best complete audio programs. So many now are going to audio/video. While iTunes can probably do this (Quicktime based), it is still simple. Good features, easy to use, very stable.
Pros: Easy, friendly, not made by MS
Cons: sometimes uses a lot of resources

Summary: OK, but doesn't remember last track/track position on startup (and this sucks)
Details: The following comment assumes that we are talking about the actual *player* used, not your fantastic foxytunes controller :). Unfortunately, none of the (Mac OS X) iTunes controllers implement a 'track memorising' feature either, so presumably this feature isn't in the APIs.
Pros: Reasonable player, could do without the iTunes store ("No Oz iTunes store yet, try again later...", yeah, right
Cons: no track memorisation feature, no Oz iTunes store (see above); hate the brushed steel UI

Details: before using itunes, i used winamp 5.03. I liked winamp for its looks and flexibility, but the sound quality was somehow not there. Once i got a good sound card and speaker setup, it was really noticable. iTunes seems to sound better. iTunes, however has some problems. Maybe i'm just ignorant, but i cannot get itunes to scan directories at startup like winamp would. This means adding the file(s) in the directory, then going to iTunes and telling it where to find them. Maybe this will be fixed in upcoming versions. Or maybe it only works within the default iTunes folder, which i don't use except for the m4a's ripped by itunes. this program is also a resource hog, runs choppy and slow even on relatively good computers. the family computer is a P4 1.4ghz with 384mb ram and a 32mb geforce 2 mx video card. it seems silly to have a media player that uses directX. Looks nice though.
Pros: Easy to use, integrates nicely, good sound quality

Summary: iTunes is the best media player out there
Details: I'm a big fan of iTunes, ever since 2 or 3.0, I've seen it change so much over the ages, it used to support 3rd party usb mp3 players, but then the iPod came out and blew the competition away. iTunes is easy, simple, and has a nice interface.
Pros: simple, nice user interface, available on mac os x and windows, aac, music videos/movie trailers on the iTunes Music Store
Cons: no iTMS Canada, a little laggy on windows, user interface could be smaller
