Music Player Daemon 0.11.4 |
Summary: Music Player Daemon is the way of the future
Details: This thing is amazing. I could be controlling mpd on another computer, say my home theatre PC, and it's just like it's local. The music all plays on the client-side, which makes it perfect for laptops just sshing in and changing the track.
Pros: Server/Client in the spirit of unix, fast and stable, lots of formats
Cons: You must have a client to use it -- what better way than FoxyTunes?
Period used: 10 weeks
Other products used: none

Summary: almost perfect!
Details: music player daemon is all I've ever wanted - separate out the music playing server from the client that controls it. the only thing I lack is an easy way to play a file not in the mpd database... otherwise its a dream
Pros: server separated from client
Cons: limited to whats in database
Period used: 4 months
Other products used: xmms, winamp, windows media player, lots of others

Music Player Daemon not sure. |
Summary: fantastic for linux geeks
Details: I turned my old 300 MHz PII into an MP3 jukebox running Gentoo Linux and Music Player Daemon, and hooked it up to my stereo (in the living room) and also some computer speakers in the bedroom. It's great to be able to roam wirelessly through the house with my laptop and control my music from a web interface. I'm interested to see how well FoxyTunes stacks up.
Pros: remote control
Cons: complicated setup
Period used: 1 yr
Other products used: itunes, musicmatch, winamp, realplayer, wmp, xmms

Summary: It can be hard to start with
Details: But if you use it, it becomes more powerful than you could possibly imagine! :D Seriously, it is great, especially if you bind everything to keyboard shortcuts. But it makes foxytunes a lot less useful. Foxytunes is great though, thanks!

Details: What I am missing is the possibility to define my own config of this toolbar (I'd make it more simple :P Now playing info, separator, playback buttons, separator, volume scroll, separator, arrow to hide all), except that - its near perfection.

Cons: Responsiveness is a bit low, not many plugins like XMMS

Summary: Great
Details: Wow, this is fantistic. It works perfect with FoxyTunes. I can use a dozen different programs to control it. If I have to work without a GUI, I can still listen to my music. I can easily program my multimedia keys to work with it. It's freaking awesome!
Pros: lightweight, doesn't require a gui, very customizable
Cons: Doesn't work with Madman yet.
Period used: few weeks

Music Player Daemon 0.11.5 |
Summary: Once set up, can make life easier
Details: MPD, even though it can be a bit quirky, can be used to create an almost seamless music experience. Most of the people I know run it as a daemon on boot, which begins play even before your computer is fully on, and can be controlled by installing the companion 'mpc' package and mapping keystrokes, buttons, or menu items to it.
Pros: Configurability, seamless integration
Cons: Somewhat quirky, do-it-yourself installation and configuration
Period used: A few months
Other products used: XMMS, mplayer & screen, RhythmBox, etc.

Music Player Daemon 0.11.5 |
Summary: Daemon-based player, many clients or write your own
Details: This is no XMMS, Winamp or Rhythmbox - those players are all self-contained, rather than fragmented like MPD/Music Player Daemon. MPD deals with all the actual hard work - maintaining the database of music and playlists, seeking through songs, crossfading and - of course - playing the actual music. The client's job is to interact with the MPD server and tell it what it should do - update the database, play a different song, stop, pause, play, seek, skip, etc. It's a great player for a low-end jukebox style machine, and I even use it as my primary desktop player - using it inside Foxytunes, my taskbar, a console terminal -- it's a surreal experience if you've had 'mediaplayer = winamp-a-like' engraved in your brain for too long.
Pros: Can write own front end, supports FLAC, MP3, OGG, MOD, IT, S3M, XM; Can be password protected and used for LAN parties...
Cons: Only been built for UNIX-a-likes. Opensource though, so you can try building it for Windows, given plenty of time and windows libraries
Period used: Only about 6 months, feels like forever. I can't remember not using it!
Other products used: XMMS, winamp Linux release, Rhythmbox, Juk, Noatun, mpg123 (!!)
