Summary: Best all-around media player for Linux

Details: MPlayer is the best all-around media player for Linux, in that it can play virtually every file format out there. These days I only carry a few media players instead of a half-dozen: MPlayer, Beep, and RealPlayer 10 (because RealPlayer streams seem to be touch and go in MPlayer). Its official GUI has some problems though. First off, it's based on GTK1. So if anyone wants to get GTK1 off their systems, don't use the official "gmplayer" GUI. There are no tooltips either on the buttons, so if you use a complex skin, it can be tough to guess which button does what. That said, though, the GUI is fully skinnable and there are some nice skins out there. I still recommend that "aterm" be your GUI :)

Summary: A great player for command line freaks

Details: The only media player other than xmms (which I only installed for foxytunes, which can't find it, grr) on my system. I use it all the time and it plays pretty much anything I throw at it. Video, audio, dvd.

Pros: It supports a load of formats and works on a console

Cons: No decent gui and poor playlist management

Details: I'm currently working on Windows so I don't have any good GUI for mplayer but these exist on Linux and overall mplayer is the best player for me : it can play all the media with low ressources and give perfect quality. Mencoder is really useful too !

Summary: my favorite aud/vid player on work computer ;)

Details: I didn't find really good playlist; watching video, I didn't find any bar to manage volume, position in stream etc. in (all) other respects it's a powerfull/nice/fast player, very good picture & sound! great work!

Summary: Plays pretty much any audio file in linux environment.

Details: Play wma, quicktime, real audio, ogg vorbis etc within linux. Is a video player as well as an audio player.

Summary: Just what I expected

Details: Works just as described: controls audio players from the toolbar. Some tests with XMMS suggest it may be nice to visually show if the player is muted or not (change the icon or something), but I can't think of any other complaints.

Details: It's just that i dont like many windows open. I love, as many others, mplayer as a console media player... on top of that, mplayer is the player that supports most of codecs on linux.

Details: MPLayer uses fifo (pipe) opened at both ends to make it easier to control it by external process, e.g. echo "seek +10" > /dev/mppipe from shell script. I would be nice to add such fifo operations to FoxyTunes.dll.linux. Thanx in advance.

Details: The Cleanest little video player I've used since it first came out on windows.. I really do Recommend this as a W.M.P,Winamp,Real player, and Quicktime Alternative.. Summary: Excellent player i ever seen

Details: perfect sound qualities, fantastic feature, supported almost every movie, sound files, even included .flv files.

Pros: All in 1 player with great sound qualities

Cons: time bar problem when playing rmvb files, but can be fixed by using keyboard control.
