XMMS CVS |
Summary: XMMS on Linux
Details: I use the latest CVS version of XMMS on my RedHat 9 box. The current implementation with XMMS from FoxyTunes 0.61 seems to work great. I just had to manually make a sym-link from /usr/local/lib/libxmms.so to /usr/lib. Perhaps you could add /usr/local/lib to your search paths to make this a little easier?

XMMS xmms: 1.2.10 / madman: 0.93 |
Details: Madman, a music library system (cfr. madman.sourceforge.net), which sends his search results to xmms. It has an auto DJ system that picks songs randomly, based on rating and listening duration. It looks like it has a very fast search allgorythm. The longer you use it, the more you will love it. You definitely have to try that. Maybe, foxytunes can send some comands to madman (like autodj and rating features)?
Pros: fast music search, even with over 5000 songs.
Cons: music library and player are different programs, but actually that is a good thing.
Period used: XMMS: 2 years. Madman: 4 months.
Other products used: rythmbox (was buggy and not as good as madman)

XMMS 1.2.10 |
Summary: Xmms is great and expandable, but sometimes cumbersome
Details: Xmms is basically winamp for linux. I really wish there was a viable iTunes knock-off for linux. I live in a dorm and I want to be able to share easily with the apple daapd protocol. I also want to be able sort by album and playlists such as rhythmbox/itunes. But only has plugins for my Microsoft Natural keyboard, so for now thats what i'm using.
Pros: Simple. Works with Microsoft Natural Media Keyboard (via Plugin). Has Jump

Summary: XMMS works great! ;)
Details: Love the plugin. On a sidenote, I wish XMMS has a skin which looks like this: http://www.winamp.com/skins/details.php?id=133717 Basically, it's a thin strip (there are three possible shapes! which are ALL shown in that screenshot) which sits (typically!) at the top of your screen...with 40% opacity and opaque on mouse hover. This would be my ideal XMMS controller but I don't want to take anything away from FoxyTunes...it's great.
