What does the Player Options sub-menu do?

With most supported media players you just need to select your player in Player > Select and you're good to go. Some players that have limiter support or non-standard configuration might require additional settings in the Options sub-menu. These players and the needed settings are listed and explained in this FAQ.

Why isn't player X supported by FoxyTunes?

The most common reason for a player not being supported by FoxyTunes is that there is no way to externally control it from another application. Many media players have documented control interfaces, while others are just stand alone applications that cannot be controlled by other programs (like FoxyTunes). If your player isn't supported by FoxyTunes and you know that it does have a control interface please send us a link to the relevant information.

If possible, we are trying to support the most popular players first.

If your player isn't supported, it is important that you vote for it.

Many votes for a particular player tell us that the player is popular and we should support it before other (less popular) players.

Is there a MacOS version of FoxyTunes?

Yes - MacOSX is supported since version 0.69.

Intel Macs will be supported natively soon, currently supported under Rosetta (see a separate FAQ).

I'm trying to control the music embedded in a Web page. Why doesn't it work?
Right now FoxyTunes is used to control the music playing in your external media player. So, if you manage to get your music to play in a supported media player, FoxyTunes will have no problem controlling it.

I am planning to add support for various formats of embedded music in the future.

Also, some pages have a non-standard HTML tag BGSOUND which is not supported by Firefox.

You might find the following link helpful in solving many of the embedded media problems in Firefox. I haven't personally tried the methods described, so please experiment at your own risk.

How can I see Unicode track titles?

First, make sure that your media player fully supports Unicode characters.

In order to see Unicode track titles correctly, leave the value of Character Encoding on Default.

Go Back

Why don't I have a seek slider in my track title panel?
Some players don't allow the track position to be changed remotely by FoxyTunes. With such players FoxyTunes won't display a seek slider in the track title panel.

Go Back

Why doesn't the mute button change when the player is muted?
Let's say that the mute button changes its state after being pressed.

Consider the following scenario:

  1. You mute the player from FoxyTunes.
  2. You un-mute it from the player itself.
  3. FoxyTunes thinks the player is muted, so the first time the (un)mute button is pressed it will in fact do nothing. This can get pretty annoying.

The real problem is that FoxyTunes isn't notified by the player (this is true for many of the players supported) when it changes its state.

Go Back

Why is the volume slider always in the middle with some players?

Some players support only increase/decrease volume commands.

In this case the slider enters a special mode of operation - it will always be at its middle position.

You can control the volume by either clicking to the left or to the right of the slider thumb, or dragging it gently. The volume will be increased or decreased, and the slider will return to its middle.

I found that the best way to change the volume in this situation is to make a few fast clicks on the left or on the right of the slider thumb (on the slider line). This will send a few increase/decrease commands and the volume will be adjusted.

Go Back

Why aren't the Play and Pause buttons merged into one toggle button?

Merging the Play and Pause buttons can be problematic.

FoxyTunes is a cross-player solution, so it needs to behave similarly with different players. Not in every player this button is a toggle.

For example, in WinAmp, the Pause button is indeed a pause toggle, but the Play button will start the playback if it is stopped or start the current track from the beginning if it's already playing. If I merge the two buttons, this functionality will be lost.

How do I uninstall FoxyTunes?

If you are using Firefox, you can use the Extension Manager that can be found in Tools > Add-ons (or Tools > Extensions with Firefox versions prior to 2).

Instructions for Mozilla users can be found here.

Please let us know why you are uninstalling FoxyTunes, so we can either try and solve the problem you have encountered, or improve future versions of FoxyTunes. Thanks! Wink

FoxyTunes just automatically switched to YouTube, what happened?

When FoxyTunes detects that a video is being played on YouTube it will automatically pause the current player and switch to control the YouTube player. This will keep both players from playing at the same time.

You can read more about YouTube support in FoxyTunes here

To disable this "auto-switching" functionality, go to the FoxyTunes main menu and select Configuration > Disable Player Auto Switching

I've updated FoxyTunes to a new version, but the installation fails. What should I do?

FoxyTunes doesn't seem to control my Music Match 9. What's going on?

Do you have a fancy Microsoft keyboard?

If so, you also probably have the IntelliSense software running. I believe that it conflicts with FoxyTunes and interferes with it controlling MMJB.

You can try to tweak the IntelliSense settings to try and solve the problem. Also, if you are not using IntelliSense and it was just installed by default with your keyboard you can try and uninstall it.

I repositioned FoxyTunes and now I can't find it. What can I do?

You can manually reset the FoxyTunes position.

  1. Type about:config in your address bar.
  2. Locate the following keys and reset them using their context sensitive menu:
    • foxytunes.parent_element_id
    • foxytunes.insert_before_element_id
    • foxytunes.insert_after_element_id
  3. Restart your browser

FoxyTunes will appear at its default position - at the status bar.

I have Fedora Core 3 Linux, and my player list is empty. What's the problem?

There is a problem with the Standard C++ Library version installed on FC3 by default. Fedora Core 3 installs libstdc++.so.6 by default, while FoxyTunes and many other packages (including official FC3 ones) require another version of this library, libstdc++.so.5. You can install the compat-libstdc++ package to solve this problem. If you are using yum, this can be done by typing yum install compat-libstdc++.

Whenever I try to close iTunes I get a warning dialog. Why?

With newer FoxyTunes versions you should no longer get the warning dialog.

When you use FoxyTunes to control iTunes, FoxyTunes connects to its standard interface. When you try to close iTunes, it knows that FoxyTunes is still connected and it displays a dialog saying "One or more applications are using the iTunes interface" to remind you of that fact. It is absolutely safe to go ahead and quit from iTunes by pressing "Yes" in this dialog. In a future version of FoxyTunes, I will add a "disconnect" option that will disconnect from the currently connected player so no dialogs are displayed.

Go Back

Sometimes Signatunes auto-insert doesn't work. Why?

With some players and under certain conditions, FoxyTunes cannot determine whether the player is playing audio or video. When FoxyTunes isn't sure that the player is playing audio, it won't auto insert the track title. You can still insert the signature with one click by pressing the 'Signatunes' button.

Go Back

Why does FoxyTunes tell me it can't connect to iTunes?

Sometimes after updating the iTunes software, FoxyTunes can no longer connect to it. Please try to uninstall and reinstall iTunes as it usually solves the issue.

If the problem remains after reinstalling please let us know

Keyboard shortcuts disabled by default

In newer FoxyTunes releases the keyboard shortcuts are disabled by default. This was done because in some cases, the shortcuts conflicted with other extensions and Web forms.

You can always enable the shortcuts and configure them in FoxyTunes options.

"No player modules found" on Intel Macs

Currently FoxyTunes is built for the PowerPC Mac platform. Native support (Universal) for Intel will be added soon.

In order to get FoxyTunes working on an Intel Mac, you'll need to turn on Rosetta:

  1. Find the Firefox icon in Applications (in the Finder)
  2. Select the icon and type Command-I (or select "Get Info" from the File or context menus)
  3. Select the "Open using Rosetta" check-box
  4. Restart Firefox

"No player modules found" on Fedora Core 5 and other Linux distributions

Fedora Core 5 and other newer distributions come with a non-standard Firefox build, which causes compatibility problems with FoxyTunes. We are looking into solving this issue. In the meantime, FoxyTunes should be compatible with the official Firefox builds that can be obtained from here.

Also, make sure you have a compatible version of the libstdc++ library installed.

Foobar2000 0.9 title update problems

When foobar2000 is minimized to the system tray, the title of the currently playing song isn't immediately updated in FoxyTunes. This is a known issue and we will work on finding a solution as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you can configure foobar2000 not to minimize to the system tray, which solves the problem.

I put FoxyTunes to the right of the browser menu but it just returns to the status bar. Why?

Update: I found a way to place FoxyTunes immediately to the right of the main menu. I've tested this on Firfox 1.0 RC2 - when dragging FoxyTunes, drop it when your cursor is over the letter "p" in "Help". This should position FoxyTunes to the right of the menu and make it stay there.

In order to position itself, FoxyTunes remembers the element immediately to its right. The problem is that the spacer element to the right of the browser main menu usually has a dynamic name that changes on every browser restart. When the browser is restarted, FoxyTunes can no longer locate the spacer element and thus reverts to its default position at the bottom.

When you position FoxyTunes to the left of the throbber element this will not happen.

Important: Please do not reposition FoxyTunes while the "Customize toolbars" dialog is open.

I'm working in 16-bit screen mode and the FoxyTunes buttons don't look right. What can be done?
FoxyTunes uses effects for its buttons that can be displayed incorrectly with certain display configurations.

There is a workaround for this - you can disable these effects.

You'll need to create and/or edit your userChrome.css file. More information on this file can be found here.

Add the following lines to this file and restart the browser:

.foxytunes-statusbar-button,
.foxytunes-statusbar-menubutton {
    -moz-opacity: 1 !important;
}

How can I make the track title aligned to the right?

You'll need to create and/or edit your userChrome.css file. More information on this file can be found here.

Add the following lines to this file and restart the browser:

#foxytunes-track-title-status-label {
  -moz-binding:
   url("chrome://global/content/bindings/general.xml#statusbarpanel")
   !important;
   text-align: right;
}

Please note that this setting disables the scroll function.

How can I change the font of the track title?

You'll need to create and/or edit your userChrome.css file. More information on this file can be found here.

Add the following lines to this file and restart the browser:

#foxytunes-track-title-status-label {
	color: blue;
	font-weight: bold;
	font-size: 14px;
	font-family: Verdana;
}

You can of course change the above to the wanted font, color, size etc. You can also use any additional CSS statements to further style the track title display.

Why is TwittyTunes part of FoxyTunes?

Since releasing TwittyTunes we have seen a large increase in people's desire to share what they're listening to through services like Twitter, Last.fm, etc. We figured it was time to bring this experimental feature to a larger audience by making it default.

I don't want it. Is there any way to hide TwittyTunes?

If you don't like it, you can always hide the button through the 'Configuration' menu. As always, please let us know why you like or dislike any of FoxyTunes' features.

Auto update is on but nothing get submitted, what's going on?

If you're playing videos, TwittyTunes won't submit them automatically. You can submit them manually if you wish.

For some players TwittyTunes doesn't know if what's playing is video or audio. If this is the case, the audio won't get automatically submitted. If you want to force TwittyTunes to submit the song, you can turn on the "Auto send unknown media types" option in the TwittyTunes configuration window.

Note: Turning on this option will only submit media types that TwittyTunes can't identify. If TwittyTunes identifies that a video is being played it won't be automatically submitted even if this option is on.

What happened to FoxyTunes Planet?

Almost two years ago, Yahoo! Music acquired the great team and technology behind FoxyTunes. FoxyTunes Planet was the best place to find everything about an artist from across the web and we've spent the last couple years working to bring this experience into Yahoo! Music. Earlier this year, we launched the new Yahoo! Music artist pages and the time has come to focus on the new pages and retire the FoxyTunes Planet. This will allow our team to focus on building the best music site possible.
