Wendy James (born January 21 1966, somewhere in East Sussex (she won't reveal where)). She left home when she was 16 and went off to live in Brighton where she studied drama and English for a year. Then she got disillusioned and left and started singing in a nightclub instead. There she met Nick Christian Sayer, they became lovers and started to write songs together, moved to London and teamed up with some punk friends, Dave Parsons, Tex Axile and Pol Burton, and formed Transvision Vamp. Their first hit, "I Want Your Love" was in 1988.

In 1993 she released her first solo album, containing songs written for her by Elvis Costello, "This ain't the time for my tears". It was not a commercial or critical success, and she was soon dropped by her record company.
