Unwound was a band based in Olympia, Washington. Formed in 1991, the band consisted of Vern Rumsey (bass), Justin Trosper (guitar and vocals), and Brandt Sandeno (drums). Sara Lund replaced Sandeno in 1992. The group released several singles and albums, primarily on the Kill Rock Stars label, before disbanding on April 1, 2002.

Unwound's early work was characterized by its heavy distortion, which was applied not only to the guitar, but to the bass and vocals as well. From this starting point, the band developed their signature sound over the course of four full length albums and numerous singles. With 1996's Repetition, Unwound began to experiment with their sound, adding synthesizers and a more melodic approach to the mix. This new direction set a precedent that the band would follow for their remaining albums, culminating in the release of 2001's Leaves Turn Inside You, a double album the band recorded themselves.
