The Dead Texan is the recording alias for Adam Wiltzie, also known for his work in Stars of the Lid. Like Stars, the music is regarded as slowcore or ambient rock. Indeed, the work presented in The Dead Texan's self-titled EP was originally intended to be released as a Stars of the Lid album. It was ultimately deemed too "busy", however, to be released as a Stars of the Lid album.

The Dead Texan was released on Kranky Records in October 2004 to generally positive reviews.
