Bridging the gap between the socially and spiritually conscious folk music of Bob Dylan and the fresh sounding hybrid pop of The Beatles, The Byrds are widely considered to have been one of the most important and influential bands of the 1960s. Throughout their career, they helped forge such subgenres as folk rock, space rock, raga rock, psychedelic rock, jangle pop, and – on their 1968 album Sweetheart of the Rodeo – country rock. After several line-up changes (with lead singer/guitarist Roger McGuinn as the only consistent member), they broke up in 1973.
