The Black Velvets are a Sleaze Rock band from Liverpool, England in the United Kingdom. They formed in 2002 by bass player Dave Dutton and singer Paul Carden, who joined together having been unhappy in their previous bands. Paul was in the Oasis-wannabes The Northern Souls, and Dave was in The Skylarks. The Skylarks released an 8-song album in Japan in 2002, titled "Death Of The 20th Century Man". Paul Molloy of The Skylarks would later join The Stands.

Dave and Paul hooked up with drummer Nick Kilroe and guitarist Robbie Ross, and began crafting a riff-driven, deep beat classic glam rock sound, and organised showcase gigs at the Cavern Club. After some bigger gigs in London, supporting among others The Who, the band signed to Vertigo Records in 2004 and released a succession of singles. Their self-titled debut Album was released in September 2005. The Black Velvets were dropped by their record label Vertigo Records in early November 2005 after their album flopped.
