Self Against City formed in early 2004 in Sacramento, California, when vocalist Jonathan Temkin, guitarists Jack Matranga and Jeff LaTour, bassist Patrick O'Connor and drummer Chris Trombley met. They immediately realized that the five of them had a great chemistry, so they began writing songs and touring the California area. Their band name originated from Temkin hearing a radio DJ use the phrase. In restrospect, he is not completely sure whether the DJ said "self against city" or "Suffragette City", a song by David Bowie from his album Ziggy Stardust.
