Róisín Marie Murphy was born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 5, 1973. She was brought up in the nearby resort town of Arklow, further south down Ireland’s eastern coast, in County Wicklow. She gained fame as the lead vocalist for UK electronic duo Moloko.

Upon meeting former Moloko partner Mark Brydon at a party, Murphy's chat-up line, "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" became the title of their debut album in 1995. Murphy had no professional experience as a singer prior to her meeting with Brydon. The two also had a romantic relationship which lasted until just before the release of the last Moloko album Statues in 2003.
