Quorthon (1966 – 2004) was the founder and song writer of the pioneering Swedish black metal band Bathory.
As an 18 year old, Quorthon pioneered a new style of extreme heavy metal [1984] by forming his band Bathory. Through the years, Quorthon fans considered him the "Father" of both the "black metal" and "viking metal" scene, the latter being a more evolved music in vein of operatic style. Always underfunded, the quality of the albums was rough and eventually created a style that many bands would later emulate. In fact, Quorthon personally paid for the production of the Bathory music video for "One Road to Asa Bay" in 1990. Though the video was completed and eventually shown on MTV's Headbanger's Ball he never saw the music video even while being interviewed on the heavy metal show. Throughout the 1990s he took full control of Bathory choosing to spend time recording music by hiring musicians rather than playing live.
