Primordial are an Irish pagan metal band that was formed in 1987 by Pól MacAmlaigh and Ciáran MacUiliam. Undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of Irish Metal, Primordial have become somewhat iconic here and with good reason. Love or loathe their charismatic and oftimes belligerent frontman, noone can deny what this Dublin band have acheived, and every Irish Metal band aspires to do something similar. A quick look at the discography below should prove the point; no less than four full albums and two mcd's all released on quality underground metal labels, a feat rivalled by no other band on this island. The success of these releases has been matched in sales by critical acclaim, extracted from the most astute critics in the field - see Gregory Whalen's 99 review of "The Burning Season" for further proof ("Few bands release albums this good never mind an EP"). Starting out on their Cacophonous debut with melodic black metal, they gradually came to refine their sound into the epic, heroic and dark work that was "A Journey's End". This is where it started to really take off; the two subsequent releases "The Burning Season" and "Spirit the Earth Aflame" showed the bands ability to channel cultural geist, emotion and powerful metal into albums of solidity and endurance. As if this wasnt enough, they have also toured with repsected names in the field, including Immortal.
