Paul Hinojos was first introduced to the mainstream music scene as the bassist for the highly influential band At the Drive-In from El Paso, Texas. After At the Drive-In took an indefinite hiatus in 2001, Paul along with Jim Ward and Tony Hajjar from ATDI formed the band Sparta.

Paul left Sparta in 2005, and a few days later announced that he had joined The Mars Volta, where he took up the role of 'sound manipulator' (previously occupied by Jim Ward's cousin Jeremy). It was annoucned that Paul would start off touring with the band but doing his sound manipulation offstage, but at later dates he would eventually join the rest of the band onstage.
