He both writes and performs his own material and his grainy, resonant voice redolent of French singers like Jacques Brel adds a certain charm to his wistful, sometimes melancholic lyrics. His compilation album is entitled The Best of Paolo Conte.

His song Come di were used in the 1999 movie Mickey Blue Eyes.
