Melanie Janine Brown (born May 29 1975) is a British singer, originally in the girl band the Spice Girls, where she was known as "Scary Spice", apparently because of her hairstyle.

Brown was born in Leeds, England to a white mother and a black father. Her first solo album, Hot, was released in 2000, and her second, L.A. State of Mind, in 2005. After her debut album failed to sell as well as expected, Melanie was dropped by Virgin Records and began to focus on television presenting and acting work rather than music. She presented the TV shows "Pure Naughty" (1999), "This Is My Moment" (2001) and the one-off special "Melanie B: Voodoo Princess" (2002). She also starred in the first season of sitcom "Burn It" (2003) and the movies "LD 50 Lethal Dose" (2003), "The Seat Filler" (2004), and the thriller "Telling Lies" (2005). Additionally, Brown played Mimi in Rent on Broadway during 2004.
