She trained herself to sing using a karaoke machine her mother got her for her twelfth birthday. Dobson is known for a blend of styles, incorporating her unique voice with heavy electric guitar riffs. Dobson is biracial: her mother is white and her father is Black. Dobson's father walked out on the family before she was born; the song "Unforgiven", on her debut album, explains the emotion she went through. Dobson was the only non-white member of her family growing up, and she had to deal with considerable hate because of her mixed family. In a 2004 MTV interview, Dobson told a story about her older sister being picked on in school because she had a black sister.
