Faust is a German band composed of Uwe Nettelbeck, Hans Joachim Irmler, Zappi Diermaier, Arnulf Meifert, Jean Herve Peron, Gunther Wustoff and Rudolf Sosna. The group formed in Wümme in 1971 (see 1971 in music) and soon began recording their debut, Faust, which sold poorly but established a devoted fanbase. With a series of early 1970s releases, Faust became one of the premier bands in the genre that would eventually be known as krautrock.

Faust experimented with the presentation of some of their records. Their first album was originally on clear vinyl in a clear sleeve. (Later reissues did not always follow this). The second album, So Far made extensive use of black, though inside the sleeve were photographs illustrating each song. The low-priced Faust Tapes (issued at the price of a single, 58 UK pence) had a visually disturbing op art design by Bridget Riley, while Faust IV consisted of a series of blank music staves. The impact of these designs is largely lost in CD reissues.
