They formed in 1989 and quickly built a following in the San Francisco Bay Area. Drummer Heifetz budgeted his time between Dieselhed and another SF band, the genre-bending experimentalists Mr. Bungle. Shaw came from Arcata's legendary Brent's TV, Ellis from funkateers, Psychefunkapus and Jonathan Segel from Camper Van Beethoven. Mixing genres, the band created an original sound that led to a recording contract with the independent Amarillo Records in the early 1990s.
