Lead singer Ed Roland cites Elton John, The Cars, The Beatles as the band's main influences.

Collective Soul was one of the most successful bands among the mid-1990s rock scene. They had 19 different singles appear on the Billboard Charts between 1994-2001 along with multi-platinum sales, though they were initially labeled as a 1 or 2 hit wonder after their initial success in 1994.
