Colin Meloy is the lead singer and songwriter for Portland, Oregon, indie pop band The Decemberists. As of 2005, Colin has written a still-unreleased musical, and a 100-page novel on The Replacements' fourth album, Let It Be, released as part of the 33 1/3 series.

He was born in Helena, Montana, and went to college to major in creative writing with the intent to become a writer, a dream which was stunted when his sister, Maile Meloy, beat him to it. He then moved to Portland where he met future bandmates Jenny Conlee and Nate Query. Prior to being in The Decemberists, Meloy was the lead singer and songwriter of Tarkio and Happy Cactus, both indie/folk bands from Missoula, MT.
