The first movie that she sang in was Payal ki Jhankar (1979 - The Sound of the Anklet). Her first full fledged song was Hum Tum Rahenge (We two will be here) in the movie Hamari Bahu Alka. She became famous with the movie Laawaaris (1981), in which she sang the famous song Mere Angne mein. She continued singing for Hindi movies through the 1980s, and got her big break in 1990 with the movie Tezaab (meaning "acid"). The song Ek do teen... (One two three...) is almost a cult classic in India.Alka has sung in more than 300 movies, many in which there is more than one song sung by her. She is a well known singer these days in India.
